# Leadership

**One sentence:** Leadership is the hand on the turn: sensing whether the moment needs to open or close, supplying the stroke it is short of, and holding a person steady while what held them together becomes a losable object.

**Articulation:** The turn is frightening; between selves, something must hold. Leadership is the holding environment that both confirms and contradicts, keeping opening from collapsing into groundlessness and choosing from hardening into rigidity. Its innermost scale is self-regulation - a flooded system defaults to one stroke and cannot choose - which makes Leadership the one part of the engine a person can turn on in the next sixty seconds. It begins with your own breath and scales unchanged to a room.

**Recognize / Respond:** the moment is flooding - yours or the room's. The response is regulate enough to see straight, then ask which stroke this moment is short of.

**One-liner:** Going first when no one has given you permission.

**Grounding:** psychological safety research (Edmondson, Timothy Clark), the holding-environment structure, self-regulation as the doorway to accurate perception. Full research map: https://wildintelligence.com/science.html#leadership
